How to Make a GIF in Photoshop

A GIF, which is the abbreviation of Graphics Interchange Format, is just an animated image. Even though there are multiple ways to create a GIF, Photoshop is simple and accessible. GIFs are not videos, but rather they are animated images.

Now that we have learned what a GIF is let’s learn how to make it. It’s easier than you think. All you need is the Photoshop program and the ability to follow instructions. Again, we assure you that it is not difficult.

Importing Images Into Photoshop

To make GIFs in Photoshop, there are different paths to follow. If you have a series of images, follow these instructions.

  1. Open the “Photoshop” program.
  2. Drag your mouse cursor to the top of the screen, on the navigation bar.
  3. Find the “File” bar. It is located on the left side of the screen and next to the “Edit” menu.
  4. Click the “File” menu and come down to “Scripts.”
  5. After clicking the “Scripts” option under the “File” menu, come across “Load Files into Stack…”.
  6. A window with “Load Layers” text written on the top of it will appear. By clicking the “Browse” in the window, another tab will open. This tab enables you to pick images from your computer. You must choose multiple images to create a GIF.
  7. After choosing images, select the “Open” button.
  8. These images will be loaded into Photoshop as one single file.
  9. Click the “Okay” button.

For Single to No Images

  1. Hover your cursor to the top of the screen, on the navigation bar.
  2. Find the “File” bar. It is located on the left side of the screen and next to the “Edit” menu.
  3. Click the “File” menu and come down to “New…”. (or you can use the Ctrl+N keyboard shortcut.)
  4. Choose your image and drag it into the Photoshop project window or select your image by clicking the “Open” button listed below the “New…” option.

To create additional frames for other images inside this new document, you will need to create layers for each of these manually. You have two options here.

  1. You can either select the “Layer” menu, come down to the “New…” bar, and come across to “Layer…” Its keyboard shortcut is Shift+Ctrl+N).
  2. Or you can click the “New Layer” option on the layer palette, which is located to the left of the “Trash Bin” icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

When you have completed this step, do not forget to name each layer. This will prevent any disorganization in the workflow. To rename each one separately, you can double-click the layers name in the layers palette and then type the name.

opening the timeline panel

Opening the Timeline Panel

Once you have uploaded your images into Photoshop and completed these steps, you are one step closer to create an animated gif in Photoshop. The next phase is opening the “Timeline” window and working within this window. Since it is not open by default when you open Photoshop, you will have to open it manually

  1. Find the “Window” on the navigation bar.
  2. Click it and come down to the “Timeline” option. You will see a whole new panel that appears at the bottom of the screen.

Create Frame Animation and Making Frames From Layers

This step is the easiest one because since there is not much to do. Completing this step, we are getting closer to forming our GIF.

  1. Come to the “Timeline” panel and click “Create Frame Animation.” This option will create the first frame automatically.
  2. In the same menu, find the “Make Frames from Layers” option and click it. It is located as a flyout on the right side of the “Timeline” menu. This will enable you to select every single frame in the “Timeline” panel and edit them as you wish.

Looping Options

If you want to repeat the image more than once, you can change it from the “Timeline” panel.

  1. Find the “Once” option located at the bottom of the toolbar and below the timeline.
  2. Click the “Once” option. You can set it to 3 times, for an unlimited time, or by clicking “Other…”, you can specify the number of times.
  3. Select the “Forever” option so that your GIF can be played repeatedly.
  4. Select all frames by holding down the shift key and click the arrow down located under the last frame.
This will enable you to set the timing, which means how long every frame will appear before switching to the next one. Even though this arrow-down is located under each frame, clicking the last one after selecting all frames is enough.

Creating the GIF

  3. Come down to “Save as…”. A new window will be open. Choose where and under what name you wanted to save your GIF, and then click the “Save” button. Your file will be saved in the “PSD” format.
